Organics Recycling in Queensland:

Benefits to the Economy and PFAS as an Industry Challenge

AORA QLD Breakfast

Wed 19 April 2023

Colmslie Hotel - Cnr Wynnum and Junction Road, Morningside

7.30am for an 8am start, approx finish time is 10am

Speakers:

Dr Matthew Askeland. PhD(EnvEng), BAppSc(EnvSc)(Hons), Senior Environmental Scientist & PFAS Specialist - ADE Consulting

Matthew Askeland is an environmental scientist active in the consultancy sector as a contaminated site specialist. He holds key expertise pivotal in the delivery of contaminated land and water solutions, including site characterisation, risk assessment and remediation (Petrochemicals, VOC, PFAS, PCBs, PAHs, Pesticides and Heavy Metals).

Matthew’s current focus is on tackling multiple elements within the PFAS risk management practice. These include site characterization, sample analysis, risk assessment, OHS risk management, treatment technologies and the development of effective management strategies for both legacy and ongoing PFAS use.

Matthew Askeland was commissioned by AORA to respond, on behalf of the Recycled Organics Industry to the PFAS NEMP 3.0

Matthew will present his findings on the very real challenge PFAS poses to the successful use of recycled organics in Queensland and how this threat will impact the successful diversion of organics away from landfill.

Nick Behrens, Director Australian Economic Advocacy Solutions

Nick will provide an update on the Recycled Organics Industry in Queensland and its contributions to;

  • Queensland Economy
  • Benefits to positive environmental outcomes in Queensland
  • Potential upside to Queensland from increased diversion rates of organics

Pravin Menon, Consultant, Scenic Rim Regional Council

As part of Scenic Rim Councils' commitment to shifting towards a circular economy, Council wishes to expand the services available at the Bromelton Waste Facility and associated waste facilities.

It wishes to explore the possibility of the diversion of food scraps and garden waste away from landfill which currently account for 40% of kerbside waste across the region and to understand opportunities to maximize the use of existing waste assets including the landfill. Inviting expressions of interest will help council understand the current state of the industry and to identify potential partners.

How to use our booking system  (can be paid by credit card or invoice) - THIS BOOKING SYSTEM WORKS BEST ON CHROME and FIREFOX (and if you already have a user account, login via the brown button at the top right of the page first).

Our booking system uses your email address to identify whether you are a member or not, therefore the system defaults to 1 ticket at a time.

To book a ticket, type in your email and click lookup.  If the system identifies you as a member, it should bring up the member pricing, auto-populate your name and you can add your business name and any dietary requirements.   If you need to purchase another ticket, there is the option to add another in at the bottom of the box (do this as many times as you need for your booking - you can use your own email for ease of booking if you are unsure if their email is part of the membership)  Then you will be able to go to the cart and proceed through the checkout as one bulk purchase.

If you are a member, but it doesn't recognise your email address it means you are not linked to your business membership (and it will not apply member pricing to this ticket.)

To solve this you have two options  -1)  go to https://www.aora.org.au/membership and click the button that says sign up for an account to connect.  Put your email in here and click look up, find your business name (it may be listed as the registered trading name of the business) and click connect.  Your membership account administrator will need to approve your connection.  They simply need to login into their account and approve you.

Option 2)  Send an email to Alex (alex@aora.org.au)  with the subject  Membership Connection Needed.  In the email please include the full name of the staff member, their email address and the registered/trading name of your business. Alex will endeavour to get your staff member linked within 24 hours.

Please note, there is no way for us to retroactively apply member pricing to a booked ticket, so you will need to proceed through the process above (this is a one time action for linking staff to membership.)

For non-members, your email will not be found during lookup.  All you have to do is fill out your info and when you get to the checkout, you will be able to create a website user account to enable your transaction to take place in the secure payment portal.

PLEASE NOTE - OUR SYSTEM SOMETIMES TAKES A MOMENT TO PROCESS YOUR CREDIT CARD.  If you think that something may have gone awry, you can check in your member portal under transactions.  If it shows pending, you can access your invoice and pay directly through the credit card link on the invoice.
