Soil Improvement with Recycled Organics in the Adelaide Hills, Longview Vineyard - Wednesday 6th Nov 2019

Presented Jointly by the Adelaide Hills Wine Region and Australian Organics Recycling Association, AORA

Leading Industry Speakers in Soil Assessment and Improvement

This Seminar will provide growers with a solid introduction to key attributes of soil health and opportunities for improvement:

  • Introduce principals of biological input farming, regenerative agriculture and approaches for improving organic matter, building soil carbon and general soil health that benefits the entire ecosystem not just the above ground vines.

  • An understanding of the benefits of increasing soil carbon including lifting yields, quality, improving soil consistency and water holding capacity.

  • Techniques for assessing soil health and application techniques for biological inputs, including recycled organics such as compost, mulch and biochar.

Regional Soil Health Insight –  Henschke Vineyards

Craig Markby, Viticulturalist of Henschke Vineyards has shared his insights with AORA recently on his experience of using compost in vineyards including addressing the challenges of compost application on steep blocks using the Jolly Spreader. The Jolly Spreader benefits will be outlined including targeted and quicker application of compost on slopes giving a payback on the machine through labour savings of just one year.

Stay Engaged on Soil Health

Following the seminar, growers will have the option to nominate to be part of a “Building Regional Soil Health Champions” focus group.

AORA will stay in touch with and connect those who nominate in order to identify and promote examples of best practice in soil improvement with recycled organics, including with reference to the AORA Compost for Soils resources:  https://www.aora.org.au/compost-for-soils

AORA SA Associate Member Speakers:

Tim Marshall, TM Organics

A leader in organic agriculture and certification in Australia for 35 years and a significant contributor to organic standards and certification in worldwide forums. Tim will speak on fundamental elements of regenerative and biological farming.

Oli Madgett

Co-Founder of Platfarm, the organiser of Adelaide Ag Tech Meetup Group and runs a vineyard with his family in the McLaren Vale. Oli will describe the use of soil mapping and aerial imaging in precision application of compost and demonstrate features of Platfarm that facilitate farmers to assess soil carbon farming opportunities.

This project is supported by the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board through funding from the Australian Government's National Landcare Program and NRM levies.
